Combined Counties League - Premier Division Match
With an early goal under their belt, Chertsey Town looked like they might be able to ride their luck in the second half and snatch all the points against lively hosts Camberley Town. Still only a goal ahead by half time despite generating most of the momentum, the home side came back strongly after the break to hit two late goals and seal the only double conceded by Chertsey this season.
The game plenty of action and it seemed that Camberley might be the ones to press ahead at the start and although the back line mopped up well before Michael Lidbury in the Chertsey goal was put into any trouble, this is the first time for many weeks that so much possession had been conceded.
The situation was steadily reversed as Chertsey took a seventh minute lead with Aaron McLeish snaking into a crowded penalty area. Nonetheless, he was able to put a short pass away to Mark Waters. His first time touch sent the ball across the Camberley goalmouth where John Pomroy turned it in.
Chertsey pressed their advantage and although won a string of corner kicks, were not allowed to pepper the home goal with a powering 12 yard McLeish strike that Liam Stone was just able to parry away for yet another corner.
The tables were turned after the interval and although both sides played with gusto, speed and skill on an excellent playing surface, it was the reds of Camberley that had the edge. McLeish might have set up a decent cushion after breaking through the middle but his shot was wild and high.
At the other end, Stephen McNamara headed away one goal bound strike but then it looked like the equaliser was coming when tenacious play set up a penalty kick midway through the half. Julian Sills took the kick but it was not good enough to fool Lidbury who, although sent the wrong way, managed to stop the ball and allow Chertsey to breath again.
Play was still vibrant to the end and Camberley had not given up even though they were forced to defend deep at times. Either side could have notched another goal but it was Camberley that had the edge which was rewarded ten minutes from the end when a shot coming in from the left flank hit the far Town upright and rebounded onto McNamara who stood no chance of getting out of the way as the ball rebounded over the line to make the score a goal a piece.
Opportunities continued to present themselves at either end by a last gasp winner was created with, again a cross from the left being headed down towards that infamous far stick by Adam Cornell. The ball missed the foot of the upright by inches, to make a perfect movement and set up the winner for Camberley Town to maintain their fourth place in the league table.
