Combined Counties League - Premier Division Match

MATCH REPORT

Chertsey Town’s weekend journey for their Combined Counties League match at lowly Colliers Wood United took them to Cobham’s ground on a Friday evening because the continual wet weather has put Wood’s ground temporarily out of action. It remains to be seen if the exercise was futile as, despite building a healthy and seemingly unassailable three goal lead, one bank of floodlights tripped out of action, leading to the premature conclusion of the contest.

Chertsey were never in a trouble throughout the action and were comforted by a fifth minute lead which was hardly threatened thereon. The goal came from a left flank corner kick from John Pomroy. Defender Jack Francis met it in front of his marker with an extended foot and the ball fizzed past goalkeeper Nick Peters to lash the back of the home goal netting.

Two alterations were made to the line up from three days previous and both starters were the prime participants in the opening goal but they were also active throughout the exchange. Although not the only stopping post, Frances ensured that Colliers Wood only had a couple of scraps of half chances to make any impression throughout the game.

Pomroy, on the other hand, was active at the coal face and eventually came to add his name to the list of scorers in the second half. But before that, Steve Goddard almost unwittingly scored when his cross from the same left flank was deflected goal wards but Peters was able to react this time, to give away a harmless corner kick.

Town eased to a two goal lead soon after the half time break with a 25 yard Pomroy free kick which he delivered low round a rickety wall, wrong footing the goalkeeper who dived too late to stop the ball running into his goal. Chertsey buzzed around the Colliers Wood penalty area. Another Pomroy strike from the edge of the area saw the ball flicked over for another corner.

Goddard then headed a cross square against the cross bar as Town continued to exert pressure. Another goal had to come and it was Bamford who this time delivered just past the hour. Good movement on the left once more saw the ball swung over for a comfortable side foot conversion at close range for goal number three.

Chertsey were driving further out of sight as the minutes ticked by. The home side had difficulty in countering Goddard’s long throws which generates two openings that were only just scrambled away out of a forest of Wood’s legs. Andy Crossley also created problems at the back.

With the game in the bag, movement from the substitutions bench became regular traffic towards the end and with Chertsey still in command, the game was effectively over as a contest. It seemed Town’s three points had been safely deposited before the lighting on one side were extinguished but so confident that red tape would not deny Chertsey of ultimate victory, no attempt at playing out the dying embers of the match were attempted.
