Combined Counties League - Premier Division Match
Chertsey Town’s first home game of the season repeated the score line of their opener at home last term with an emphatic victory, this time over Colliers Wood United. Manager Spencer Day will, however, be better pleased this time round with the performance, having in mind of the slump in form that quickly followed Chertsey’s sparkling start, is to be avoided this time round.
The side was unchanged from the Wembley match and immediately looked comfortable, but with only a John Pomroy lob that was tipped aside to show for early pressure. Uncertainty crept in midway through the first half and the visitors were give two good opportunities to open up the scoring, suggesting that the contest was going to be more testing than first imagined.
Wood’s Steven Lang was twice in position to put the ball away but failed on each occasion, the second from plum in front of goal, failing to connect with a right wing cross just a few yards out. A rare Steve Gibson error set up another gap but again the lapse was not punished. Failure to grab those chances was uncomfortably felt only four minutes later when a machine gun burst of activity cut down all ambitions Colliers Wood had of taking anything from the game.
Three quick fire goals crushed further meaningful resistance starting, on 35 minutes, with a low and powerful Steve Goddard shot that goalkeeper James Farrow was unable to completely stop so that the ball forced its way through him and crept over the line. No recovery time was afforded by the eager Chertsey attack when a long throw from near the halfway line was cleverly shielded by Pomroy for some distance until they had both reached the required range. He then swivelled and deftly chipped the ball over the keeper.
Only two more minutes escaped before the destination of all three points was confirmed with goal number three. Andre DeLisser in his midfield role squared the ball from the right flank some 20 yards out. From left of centre, Pomroy was able to pick his spot and curled the ball round Farrow for another classic goal.
More midfield sparkle was evident two minutes after the interval, this time from Ollie Treacher who set of on a tenacious and probing run on the left. He found the goal line and hooked the ball over to Goddard who fired in on the far post from close range to open up a really serious gap between the two teams. This gave scope for activity from the substitute’s bench. Firstly, Andy Weir came on for Jack Francis.
A further Chertsey goal was added to the score line on 65 minutes when a strong DeLisser run on the far right wing created acres of space. He knocked the ball into the Colliers Wood goal area where Pomroy, from eight yards, hooked the ball home for perhaps fastest hat trick of the season.
Matt Grave and Andy Crossley both joined the action from the bench, the latter, at just sixteen years of age, certainly to gain experience of football at senior level. His ball control is demonstratively of high standard but still needs to develop vision.
The only blip in the game for Chertsey came 20 minutes from time by conceding a goal in a disappointing manner. In losing possession near the halfway line, the ball was worked back along the Wood’s right and crossed for ex Chertsey Daryl Swaby to neatly put the ball away with the Town defence off balance.
